The I-52 was a Japanese submarine active during World War II and was a member of the C3-class of submarines. It was launched in March 1944 and was assigned to conduct long-range missions, such as supplying German U-boat bases in the Atlantic Ocean and conducting reconnaissance missions.
On June 23, 1944, the I-52 was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by an American B-24 Liberator aircraft while en route to supply German submarines. The submarine's cargo included 146 tons of raw rubber, a naval intelligence officer, and two Japanese naval officers. The sinking of the I-52 is considered a significant event as it was the only documented case in which Japanese and German military forces coordinated their efforts during the war.
